This book is basically a pumpkin spice latte in novel form.
Bonfire and Bliss Bookstore is the second book in the Hope Harbor series. I have not read the first book in the series (Darling Daffodils Farms), though it is now on my TBR list. Book 2 in the series takes us (back, if you have read the first book) to the charming town of Hope Harbor, where the leaves are changing, the bookstore is thriving, and a fake “book boyfriend” is about to become the real thing. Penny Darling owns the local romance bookstore and has zero interest in falling in love after a humiliating broken engagement. Unfortunately for her (but fortunately for the reader!), her childhood best friend, Monty, agrees to be her fake boyfriend in an effort to hinder the matchmaking efforts of the town’s residents.
This book fits the friends-to-lovers trope, as Penny and Monty have plenty of shared history with a hefty dose of secret crush on the side. While they grew up together, Monty got taken away from Hope Harbor, though has recently returned. Penny and Monty pick up where they left off, with the added challenge of pretend-dating to make things interesting. What starts out as a scheme to provide Penny with some breathing room, quickly leads the exploration of long-repressed feelings. Their banter is fun, the chemistry is undeniable, and Monty is exactly the kind of cinnamon-roll hero that’s impossible not to love.
But besides the great main characters, can we also talk about the setting? A romance bookstore in a cozy small town during peak fall season? Yes, please. The bonfires, festivals, colorful leaves, and close-knit community made me want to pack my bags and move to Hope Harbor immediately. Brittanee Nicole has a way of making the town feel just as important as the romance itself.
One thing to know before diving in: this is an open-door romance, and the spice level is definitely turned up. If that’s your thing, you’ll have a great time. If you usually stick to closed-door romances, this one may be a little too naughty for your liking, so keep that in mind before committing.
Overall, this was the kind of feel-good romance that leaves you smiling when you turn the last page. It’s sweet, steamy, funny, and filled with all the cozy fall vibes you could ask for. If you’re looking for a romance that pairs perfectly with a fuzzy blanket and your favorite warm drink, add this one to your list. I loved it, have already downloaded the first book in the series, and will be looking for the third installment in the Hope Harbor series to come out next fall!
