Sarah Beth Dursts’ third installment in the Spellshop Series, "Sea of Charms", truly is a sea of charms. Durst does an amazing job at writing strong-willed women, who are able to overcome the challenges thrown their way as we move through the remnants of Alyssium and the Crescent Islands Empire.
In "Sea of Charms", we meet Marin, a side character in the first two books, who works as a sailor delivering supplies, letters, and sometimes enchanted animals in the aftermath of the rebellion of Alyssium. Marin is a wonderful main character to follow through the story as she is resourceful, kind, and has a heart for adventure. Unlike in the first two books where we are set in one spot in the Crescent Empire, with Marin, we go from island to island meeting new characters.
When we are first introduced to Marin, it is in the aftermath of a broken engagement that led to her family's financial ruin. During this, Marin takes over her family's business as a sailor delivering supplies to the islands in the Crescent Islands Empire. However, things take a turn when she arrives in the capital to find it in ruins and people fleeing. In the chaos of it all, we meet our main love interest, Dax, a devoted musician who refuses to leave behind his instruments and sheet music. Marin and Dax make a deal. They will pretend to be in a relationship and in return, Dax will help her on her boat, Silver. Against her better judgment, Marin begins to find herself intrigued with Dax. His bright smile, his laugh, the way he tells stories.
"Sea of Charms" quickly became my favorite installment in the Spellshop Series. Durst does an amazing job at writing relatable female leads who all have distinct personalities, Kiela from the first book is wildly different from our new main lead. Marin is adventurous, fun, loud, and kind of feisty at times. I am able to relate to Marin more than Kiela or Terlu from the second book as I feel it is easy to see yourself in her, especially if you've ever been made to feel small by the people around you. Marin is a prime example of finding yourself in the chaos of life while also staying true to what makes you unique.
If you are looking for a quick, cozy fantasy, this is an amazing choice! The Spellshop series are all stand-alone books so it is not necessary to read them in order but I do recommend reading the other two as they are just as good and just as cozy.
