I went into this book expecting a mystery set on a remote island, which it was. But it was also a beautifully written story about grief, hope, family, and the lengths we’ll go to protect both the people we love and the world around us.
Set on a tiny island near Antarctica that’s home to the world’s largest seed bank (yes, I had to Google what that is and if they actually exist) the novel follows a father and his three children whose isolated lives are upended when a mysterious woman washes ashore during a violent storm. This book is not a fast-paced thriller, so if you need an adrenaline spike with your stories, this one may not be for you. Instead, the mystery unfolds as a character-driven drama that takes its time to develop history and setting. For instance, the island is breathtaking, wild, and unforgiving, and the atmosphere is so vivid that I could almost feel the icy wind and crashing waves. And the drowning scene…..oof, that one had me in a panic.
I will admit that the pacing felt a little slow in places, especially in the first half, but once the pieces started coming together, I couldn’t stop reading. The ending was emotional without feeling overly sentimental. If you enjoy literary fiction with a touch of suspense, unforgettable settings, and characters who feel relatable, Wild Dark Shore is worth picking up.
