Karen Spears Zacharias, author of The Murder Gene, returns to Thornwell Books on Monday, March 25th at 6:00pm to discuss her most recent book, No Perfect Mothers. Like The Murder Gene, which is based on the true story of a Burke County born serial killer, Zacharias newest book is based on the true story of Carrie Buck, a young woman who was forcibly sterilized by the state of Virginia after she became pregnant by a member of her foster family. In 1927, her case against the state eventually reached the US Supreme Court which upheld the Virginia Eugenical Sterilization Act. Zacharias breathes new life into these historical characters. But more importantly, she highlights the tension that still exists in a society that decides that some lives are more important than others. Join us for Karen Spears Zacharias reading and book signing and discuss this complex topic.
