The Cold Read

Tara Laskowski

(Pub date 11/10/2026)

I enjoyed this one! Think of it as "The Shining" meets "And Then There Were None". Laskowski creates an eerie, unsettling atmosphere reminiscent of the Overlook Hotel, paired with the suspicion and intrigue of a classic Agatha Christie mystery. In true thriller fashion, something sinister lurks around every corner, and everyone has something to hide.

The book takes place a decade after a tragic death on the set of the horror movie No One Can Hear You Scream. Four former castmates and a horror genre influencer return to the secluded ski resort where the movie was filmed. (I couldn’t read descriptions of the lodge without thinking of "The Shining"). Now that the gang’s all back together, everything starts going sideways. Tensions rise, long-hidden truths surface, and the cast soon realizes they're trapped in a real-life nightmare much scarier than any horror movie.

The book was good, kept me guessing and on the edge of my seat, but I couldn’t help but feel that it was following the rulebook of scary thrillers a little too closely. It checks all the spooky boxes, and while that makes for an entertaining read, it doesn’t necessarily break new ground. But, hey, sometimes that’s all you can ask for as a reader.

There’s something to be said for a thriller that knows its audience and delivers exactly what they came for. If you enjoy isolated settings, suspicious characters, and a healthy dose of impending doom, this one is worth picking up. It may not reinvent the genre, but it’s an enjoyable ride.
